ROZA School Program
Schoolchildren’s Diet Low in Vegetables
The daily diet of schoolchildren countrywide does not have sufficient vegetables for healthy eating. This is evident from a survey on “Thailand’s Food and Nutrition” conducted in 2003 by the Nutrition Division of Department of Health under the Public Health Ministry. An everyday consumption for provinces upcountry was only one serving of vegetables a day. For Bangkok metropolis, 41.1% of schoolchildren consumed vegetables everyday at an average of 14.3 grams per person. This portion is equivalent to approximately 1.5 table spoons, much lower than the 12 table spoons a day or 4 table spoons per meal recommended by the Ministry’s “Nutrition Guide Pyramid” Hence, consuming a diet of carbohydrates, fat and sugar, which are high in calories and low in nutrients, is not beneficial to the health of schoolchildren.
